Not every child gets a Narnia

And not every child necessarily needs one. But I'm beginning to believe that there's at least a doorway for the child in every one of us, and that Seanan McGuire is pretty well on her way helping us find them.

This Week's Recommendation

In an Absent Dream ~ Seanan McGuire

This is the fourth book in Seanan McGuire's hauntingly, perfectly-imperfect Wayward Children series. Lundy, the heroine of this particular fable, struck close to home for me. Separated from her peers because her father is the principal of the local elementary school, Lundy doesn't turn to angst or rebellion. Instead, she is steady, practical, and comfortable with being alone.

And Seanan skillfully shows that just because someone is steady, practical, comfortable in their skin - not wild, not unfulfilled, not unloved or terribly misunderstood - these characteristics don't preclude being the lead role in your own adventure. That a desire to know and follow the rules doesn't save you from mistakes. And that there really is a door for everyone.
