Practical Geek Decorating
I am certain that I am not the only person who loves to own and use tech, but also loves the idea of having a well-decorated and orderly home. My trips to Barnes & Noble often find me sitting at a cafe table with an odd mix of CSS, web, PhotoShop, and Home Decorating magazines. Frustratingly - there is very little overlap between the two.
The well-decorated rooms between the glossy pages seem to be almost entirely free of wires or screens - with the exception of the occasional, un-plugged laptop, or flat-screen t.v. Even the home offices sport minimal tech. Where do they put it all? You can't use it if you can't find it! And what's the point of tech you don't USE?!
So how to approach the difficulties of decorating/organizing a civilized-looking home around all the screens and cords and gadgets that come along with a love of all things new and shiny? Where do I even start?
As much as I would love to sweep through the entirety of my house, replacing furniture and ruthlessly culling all unnecessary junk that my family has accumulated up until this point, I would run out of money less than an hour in, and probably end the day curled up around some soothing tea and my laptop in a ball of abject despair. Instead - I'll continue my culling and throwing out, room by room (which costs me none of the money that slides through my bank account at what - to me - seems an alarming rate). And in the meantime - I research - building my ideal balance of geek design and home decorating in my mind until I can afford to create it in real life!
Priority Project 1: Television, gaming consoles, and the piles of stuff that goes with them.
Priority Project 2: My computer setup.
Someday, my computer workspace will look something like this:
A clean desktop, featuring dual screens, docks for various portable devices (iPod, phone, etc), and space for my laptop to rest when I'm not carrying it from place to place. There will be speakers. And all the cords will be neatly hidden away behind or under the desk - well out of tripping distance. (Yes, I killed the front audio port of my computer by accidentally wrapping the cord of my headset around my foot and attempting to walk away. No, it's not funny - although my husband thinks it is.)
Someday.

Who has an office that looks this good? (Is that a fake dog? I think it is!) |

This is a Mac Setup, not PC - but this is the basic idea. |
Someday.
Ahh, the promise of a well organized future is in my dreams as well. =D
ReplyDeleteThat Mac setup is spectacular. *drool*
ReplyDeleteWhere oh where did you find that Mac set up? It is awesome. I am totally envious of my brother's new setup of a Macbook Pro and 27.5" LED Cinema display. A 27.5" iMac with second matching LED Cinema display would be totally amazing and so so cool.
ReplyDeleteI was just google-ing images of dual screen computer setups, looking for some desk inspiration. The page with the original image is here: http://www.desktopped.com/featured/2010/02/mac-office-with-plenty-of-screen-real-estate/
ReplyDeleteAnd yes, it is beautiful!
I'm happy with my dual-screen desktop PC, but would love to be able to have my setup look that clean!
