I'm too tired to be witty...

..but being too tired to recommend a book would mean I was truly exhausted.

The Weekend's Read

Amberlough ~ Lara Elena Donnelly

I admit that I've picked up Amberlough at the library, then at the bookstore, then at the library again, for its' beautiful cover alone, and then put it down again. I regret that this means that I've come to this book a little late in the game.

This book is very little like what I expected, but everything that it sets out to be.  Set in the fictional city of Amberlough - it has the detailed, fantastic world-building that I expect from fantasy novels, and yet none of the magical/supernatural elements that define fantasy to me. Instead, the magic lies in the easy way Lara Elena Donnelly weaves the points of view of her 3 main characters into a story that is equal parts intrigue, politics, and understated romance.

Read if: You enjoy stories about the twenties. You enjoy a little bit of politics. You enjoy differing points of view. You're looking for LGBTQIA reads. Morally gray characters.

Warnings: Sex. Graphic description of torture. Dubious morals (?). Possibly some unlikeable male characters.
