Awareness and Thankfulness
I'm writing this post from my living room couch - a lovely object that tends to induce naps in the unsuspecting and unwary. While many people are gathering with variously-sized groups of friends and family to gorge on a meal that heralds the beginning of the "prepare for the Christmas feast" marathon, Josh and I are spending a quiet day together at home, eating leftover takeout.
The events of the last few weeks - the terrorist attacks, the tragedies, the debate over refugees, even the annoying possibility of a mouse invading our house - have caused me to be even more aware of all the reasons I have to be thankful.
I'm thankful that, as freezing rain cascades over crunchy leaves outside the windows, I have a roof over my head and walls around me.
I'm thankful for my messy, imperfect house, for the scent of reheated spanokopita and the flicker of candles (I love any excuse to light candles).
I'm thankful for the goofball of a husband in the other room who told me first thing this morning that he's thankful for me (with all MY quirks and imperfections).
I'm thankful for the wonderful family that I do have - although a vast majority of them are currently an ocean away - and for the friends who found their ways into my life and found it to be a place they want to stay.
I'm thankful that I have a job that I enjoy and that encourages me to challenge myself.
I'm thankful for a life full of so many small and often over-looked privileges.
Above all today, I'm thankful that we HAVE a day that reminds us to think about our reasons to be thankful.
What are you thankful for?
