Declutter December
It is far from being spring, so it may seem odd to be thinking about what essentially amounts to spring-cleaning at the beginning of December - but with the focus on home and hearth that comes with the holidays, perhaps it's not such a stretch. While watching Christmas decorations appear on the desks of co-workers, in the aisles of grocery stores, and in the neighbors' yards, I find myself thinking about a key component of decoration and design - white space. In specific, the ability to organize items in a meaningful manner, making their purpose clear, accessible, and with any luck, pleasing to the eye.
With Thanksgiving and thankfulness for the abundance we are sometimes unaware we have fresh in my mind and the crowded festiveness of Christmas ahead - here's the challenge we're undertaking at home for the month. A bit of a "things we own" palette cleanser for the season (and the New Year)!
Declutter December
- Pick an area of the house that is disorganized or cluttered, this is your target area.
- Sort the items in your target area.
- You must get rid of at least one item per day for the week. (a total of at least 7 items)
- If you cannot find 7 items to get rid of in your target area, and you have finished organizing it, pick another target area and work on that until you reach your total.
- If you can get rid of more than 7 items in your target area, your goal for the week is now to complete the target area (however many discarded items that requires).
- By the end of the week, whatever items you have identified as "clutter" (things you need to get rid of) must be out of your possession. This means either in the trash, or dropped off for recycling/donation.
- Put it all back together: organize the remaining items in your target area(s). This may mean cleaning items, dusting the area, folding things - etc.
That's it! Wish us luck, and feel free to join us - let me know if you do!
